Teenage girl violated, one held

A 17-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a youth in Kamalganj upazila of the district on Monday.

The victim is now undergoing treatment at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital.

Following a case filed by the victim's father, police arrested Jasim Mia, 35, son of late Nazim Mia of Boiddyanathpur village in the upazila, the same night for his alleged involvement in the incident.

Quoting Jamshed Mia, local UP member, police said Jasim forcibly picked up the girl while she was returning from a neighbour's house around 3:00pm.

He later took the girl to his residence at the village and violated her there. As the girl's condition deteriorated he left her at a village field in an unconscious state, police said.

Being informed, police went to the spot, rescued the girl around 9:00pm and admitted her to Sadar Hospital.

Away in Dinajpur, police arrested two people, including a union parishad (UP) member, on Monday night for physically harassing a teenage girl in Phulbari upazila on July 17.

The arrestees are Humayun Kabir, 36, a member of Doulatpur UP in the upazila, and his close aide Habibar Rahman, 45, of Baraipara village.

Quoting locals, police said the duo publicly physically harassed the girl while she was returning from a coaching centre at Baraihat village on July 17.

Though the duo settled the matter through a local arbitration they kept continuing to disturb the girl on her way to and from school.

Victim's elder brother filed a case with Phulbari Police Station under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on July 25 accusing the two.

Mokshed Ali, officer-in-charge of the police station, said the arrestees were produced before a court yesterday that sent them to the jail.
