Storm kills 2, damages 300 houses in Sunamganj

Nor'wester coupled with hail and rain lashed Dirai, Tahirpur and Sadar upazilas in Sunamganj district yesterday morning, leaving two people killed and damaging over 300 houses.

In Dirai, Gulena Begum, 25, wife of Jewel Kazi of Batipara village, died on the spot when a tree collapsed on her tin-shed house during the storm that lasted for about three hours from 8:00am.

Apart from this, at least nine people were injured and over 300 houses damaged by the seasoned storm that lashed Karimpur, Jagdal, Charanarachar, Bhatipara and Raphinagar unions in the upazila.

At least 214 cows were also killed by lightning in Charanarachar, Sarmagal, Karimpur, Jagdal and Shenarbagh unions during the storm, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Altaf Hossain.

Meanwhile, the storm injured at least nine people at Noagaon village in Sadar upazila.

The injured are Baha Uddin, 50, Kamal Miah, 45, Mizanur Rahman, 24, Sahidullah, 35, Sohel Miah, 25, Iynul Haque, 35, Kamal Uddin, 18, and Sarwar, 18, of the village, said Abdul Hay, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

In Tahirpur, a farmer was killed and four others were injured as a nor'wester hit Mullahpara village in the upazila.

The deceased is Abdul Jalil, 45, son of late Abdul Hasim of the village, said OC Md Shahidullah of Tahirpur Police Station.
