Schoolteacher killed over land dispute

A schoolteacher was beaten to death by his brother over land dispute at Char Kamaria Bhatipara village in Gafargaon upazila of the district yesterday.

The victim was identified as Anwar Hossain Selim, 55, an assistant teacher of Char Machlanda Dargahbari High School in the upazila.

Quoting locals, Sub-Inspector Jahidur Rahman Badal of Gafargaon Police Station said there had been a longstanding dispute between Selim and his younger brother Abdus Sabur over the ownership of a piece of land.

As a sequel to the dispute, Selim and Sabur locked in an altercation over the issue at around 9.00am. At one stage, Sabur hit Selim with stick, leaving him injured.

Hearing scrams of Selim, locals rushed to the spot and took him to Gafargaon Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. The body bore injury marks, police said.

No case was lodged with the police station concerned in connection with the murder as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday.
