A case has been filed against 15 gang members over rape of an 18-year-old girl and assaulting another physically in Ashulia.

The victim's elder sister filed the case against 10 named gang members and five unknown persons, Md Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station, told The Daily Star today.

The accused are: gang leader Sharuf (18), Al-Amin (19), Diamond Al-Amin (18), Zakir Hossen (18), Redoan (19), Badsha (18), Jihad (20), Al-Amin alias Goru Al-Amin (19), Al-Amin alias Bata Al-Amin (19), and Shakil (19).

All the accused are members of a gang locally known as "Prince Kishore gang" headed by Sharuf.

According to the case statement, on August 30 the victim along with one of her female friends and two others went for a visit to North Pabnartek area. At that time around 15 members of Prince Kishore gang including Sharuf grabbed them.

They beat the four and forcefully took two girls to a nearby remote place and raped the victim and assaulted her friend, the case statement said.

They also filmed the incident and later circulated the video footage among locals, said police.

As the video of the incident leaked, Akbar Ali, Sharuf's father, tried to conceal the issue through local influential persons by providing money to the victims' families, but failed.

The rape incident came to light four days ago and police detained four -- Sharuf, Al-Amin alias Diamond Al-Amin, Zakir and Rakib early yesterday, OC Kamruzzaman said.

Today, three of the detainees were shown arrested in the case and sent to Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Dhaka and seven days' remand was sought in connection with the case.

OC Kamruzzaman added that Rakib was kept in custody as police are yet to get any evidence against him.

However, the court will pass an order later in the day, he added.

According to police, they primarily suspected that the two girls were raped by the gang members but one of the victims last night told police she was not raped but physically assaulted by the criminals.

Police are investigating the incident and interrogating the accused to know further details, the OC said.

The 18-year-old victim was sent to One-stop Crisis Centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for medical test.
