Robbery bid foiled, 2 hurt in gunfight with cops

Two robbers were injured in police firing and two others beaten up as they tried to commit a robbery at a house in Manikganj town early yesterday.

The bullet injured robbers are Robi Sheikh, 38, of Raipur Haat area of Faridpur, and Iman Ali, 58, of Sonakanda village under Singair upazila of Manikganj. They were admitted to Manikganj Sadar Hospital.

The two others, Piar Ali and Liakat Ali, were in police custody as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday.

Police and locals said a gang of robbers went to the house of Arpana Rani Roy in Gangadharpotty-Bangram area of the town at around 3:00am and tried to enter the house by breaking open the lock of the gate.

Being informed, police went to the spot and chased the robbers, who opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate. Robi and Iman were shot in the legs during the 'shootout' while Piar and Liakat were caught with the help of locals. The rest of the gang members managed to flee.

Jakir Hasan, additional police superintendent of Manikganj, said a case was filed with Manikganj Sadar Police Station against the four.
