'Robber' killed in mob beating in Meherpur
An alleged robber was killed in a mob beating at Ashrafpur village in Sadar upazila of Meherpur district early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Ezarul Islam, 41, of Bhabanandapur in the upazila.
He was an accused in 13 cases, including six for robbery, said police.
Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station, said a gang of 14/15 stormed into the house of one Mintu Sheikh, a KSA expatriate, around 2:30am and held the family members hostage at gunpoint.
Hearing screams, the villagers rushed to the spot and caught Ezarul after a chase. However, his cohorts managed to flee.
Before fleeing the scene, the robbers hurled three crude bombs, leaving three people injured.
The angry mob then gave Ezarul a good beating, leaving him dead on the spot.
On information, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to a hospital morgue for autopsy.
They also recovered one shutter gun and a Chinese axe from the spot, said the OC.
The injured, Payira Khatun, wife of Mintu Sheikh, their son Harez Ali and neighbour Abdur Rashid, were admitted to the hospital.
