‘Robber’ killed in Jhenidah ‘gunfight’
An alleged robber was killed in a "gunfight" between police and his cohorts in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah early today.
The identity of the deceased aged 42 could not be known immediately, reports our local correspondent.
Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, said the "gunfight" took place on the Jessore-Jhenidah road at Pirojpur village in the upazila around 3:30am.
Felling trees on the road, a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery, the OC said.
As soon as a police patrol team reached there, the alleged criminals opened fire, he added.
In retaliation, police fired back triggering the "gunfight" between them that left one of the robbers bullet injured, the OC said.
The injured person was rushed to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered a firearm, five crude bombs and four machetes from the spot, the OC added.
