‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with Laxmipur cops

UNB, Laxmipur

An alleged robber was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Laxmipur Sadar upazila early today.

Deceased Abdur Rahim, 45, son of Fazal Miah, was a resident of Durgapur village in the upazila.

Acting on secret information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a police team conducted a drive at Charshahi village around 3:00am, said Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Chandraganj Police Station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a "gunfight".

At one stage, Rahim was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene.

Three police constables -- Mohosin, Mahabub and Ibrahim -- were also injured in the incident.

Police recovered one foreign-made pistol and four machetes from the spot.
