Remove illegal vehicle stands, parking in NCC: HC
The High Court today directed the local administration to take necessary steps to remove unauthorised vehicle stands, arbitrary parking and to free the footpaths from grabbing in Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) area in next 10 days.
Deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Narayanganj, uapazila nirbahi officer of Narayanganj Sadar upazila, commander of Rapid Action Battalion-11 and officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Sadar Police Station have been asked to the take the steps under the requirements of NCC authorities.
The HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain in four weeks as to why their inaction to remove unauthorised vehicle stands and arbitrary parking and to free the footpaths in the city should not be declared illegal, Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Sazu told The Daily Star.
The bench of Justice Obaidul Hasssan and Justice Krishna Debnath came up with the order and rule following a writ petition filed by NCC Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy seeking necessary directives to this effect.
Petitioners' counsel Noor Us Sadik told The Daily Star that NCC authorities have sent separate letters to the local administration on March 15, June 15 and December 28 last year requesting them to remove unauthorised vehicle stands and arbitrary parking and to free the footpaths in the city area.
But, they did not take any step to in line with the NCC letters, he said.
There are 16 authorised vehicle stands in the city, but many unauthorised stands have been set up at different areas in the city, he said, adding that the police are responsible to assist the city mayor and its chief executive officer under the City Corporation Act, 2009.
