A college girl, who was gang-raped over three months ago, tried to commit suicide at her house in Kachipara village under Baufal upazila on Sunday.

She is now undergoing treatment at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

On June 11, a gang of six raped the girl and her mother in a trawler on Tentulia River in the upazila. The incident took place when they were going to a relative's house in the area.

Later, a case was filed, accusing six leaders and activists of Najirpur union Swechchhasebak League in this connection, said police.

The girl's father said she tried to commit suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her room over a trivial family matter on Sunday night. Seeing this, her mother rescued the victim and sent her to the upazila health complex.

Later, she was shifted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for better treatment, he said.

Wishing anonymity, a close relative, however, said the accused often threatened the girl to withdraw the case.

Two days after the gang-rape, police arrested two people, including Najirpur union Swechchhasebak League Vice President Nur Alam, said OC Azam Khan Faruqee of Baufal Police Station.

They are also raiding different areas to arrest the other accused, said the police official.
