Quick trial of husband demanded
Representatives of different non-governmental organisations and civil societies yesterday demanded quick trial and exemplary punishment of the husband and in-laws of Fatema Akter Liya, 25, who was brutally tortured for dowry on December 6.
The demand was made at a human chain in the town under the banner of Zila Jouno Hairani Nirmulkaron Network, Tangail.
Khan Mohammad Khaled, president of Zila Jouno Hairani Nirmulkaron Network, and Munir Ahmed, local coordinator of Brac, spoke.
They later submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner in this regard.
Family members said Liya's husband Hafez Mohammad Shofiqul Islam, imam of Niklapara mosque and a shopkeeper at a nearby market in Bhuapur upazila, often tortured her for dowry since their marriage in 2010.
Five days into her delivery of the second child, Liya went back to hospital with swollen eyes and severe injuries inflicted on her by her dowry-greedy husband.
On the night of December 6, the victim's husband switched off the light of their room and attacked her all of a sudden with a sharp object. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the house and rescued her.
