The deceased has been identified as Amit Muhuri, 32, a listed criminal and accused in 15 cases including multiple murders.
A prisoner of cell no. 32, room no. 6, Muhuri engaged in a fight with his inmate Ripon Nath last night, Jailor Nasir Ahmed said.
“There were three prisoners in the room including Ripon and Muhuri. At one point, Ripon hit Muhuri on the head with a brick,” he told The Daily Star.
Muhuri was first rushed to the hospital jail and then to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Shilbrata Barua, an officer at hospital’s police outpost, confirmed The Daily Star of the declaration.
From what could be known, Muhuri was arrested by detectives in 2017 over a case filed over murder of his friend.
