Post-polls violence leaves 1 dead, 40 hurt in 3 dists

An Awami League activist was killed and at least 40 others were injured in post union parishad polls violence in three districts yesterday.

In Magura, an Awami League activist was hacked to death allegedly by a rival group at Bagbaria village in Goyeshpur union under Sreepur upazila of Magura district.

The deceased is Bablu Mia 26, son of Abdul Kader of the village, reports our Jhenidah correspondent.

Police and locals said a rivalry had been prevailing between the supporters of Awami League nominated chairman candidate Abdul Halim and rebel candidate of AL Yousuf Ali Molla over the UP election held on Saturday.

Supporters of Yousuf, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked Bablu, a supporter of Halim, around 9:45am yesterday, leaving him dead on the spot when he was sitting near his house, said Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur Police Station Rezaul Islam.

No case was filed in this connection as of filing of this report around 6:00pm yesterday, said the OC.

Away in Sherpur, at least 30 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of winning candidate Selim Miah and defeated candidate Mostafa Fakir in Lasmonpur union under Sadar upazila of the district yesterday noon.

Of them, 19 were admitted to Sherpur Sadar Hospital, reports our correspondent.

Police arrested three people in this connection, said Mazharul Karim, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.    

In Tangail, over 10 people were injured over post-polls violence in Birtara union under Dhanbari upazila of the district yesterday, reports our correspondent.

Several shops and houses and a kindergarten school were also vandalised during the incident, said police.

Of the injured, one Jewel Ahmed was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital while the rest were given first aid at local hospitals and clinics.

Police arrested a man in this connection, OC Mozibor Rahman of Dhanbari Police Station said, adding that a case was filed in this connection.

In another development, Awami League (AL) has expelled nine of its local leaders, including eight rebel chairman candidates, in Delduar and Madhupur upazilas in the district for contesting in the union parishad election for chairman posts against the party nominated candidates and violating party's decision.
