Pirojpur judge transferred to bring situation under control: law minister

Law Minister Anisul Huq today gave an explanation about the government decision behind the stand release of Pirojpur District and Sessions Judge Abdul Mannan, saying that the judge has been transferred in order to control and restrain the situation over the bail of Awami League leader AKMA Awal and his wife.

"Judge Abdul Mannan was very insolent and rude with the lawyers of Awal and Pirojpur Bar Association members seeking Awal's bail in the cases against him. The lawyers of the bar decided to boycott the court and people took to the street. The judge has been withdrawn to bring the situation under control," he said.

The law minister said this at a press briefing at his secretariat office. He also added that rejecting the bail petition of an accused is a discretion of the court.

"But if the court behaves in such a manner and creates such a situation where upholding the rule of law comes into question, then we must take steps. Following the situation, steps have been taken. There was no flouting of the rule of law," the minister said.

He also said the High Court had granted ad-interim bail to Awal and his wife in the cases filed against them and the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court had dismissed the appeals against the HC orders of bail.
