N’ganj teacher humiliation: HC orders further probe

Rejecting the police probe report, the High Court today ordered a Dhaka court to hold investigation into the incident of public humiliation of Narayanganj school teacher Shyamal Kanti Bhakta.

The HC court directed the chief metropolitan magistrate in Dhaka to hold a fresh inquiry with a view to unearth the offence and identify the perpetrators and submit the report to the High Court on November 3.

Police on August 7 submitted a probe report to the HC saying that they have found out the public humiliation of Shyamal Kanti was an "unexpected situation" resulted from a rumour.

The High Court bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das said the report submitted by police is "incomplete" and "inconclusive" as the police has failed to identify the perpetrators who are responsible for the humiliation of Shyamal Kanti.

The HC fixed November 6 for passing the necessary order on this issue. 

In the second week of May, a video clip went viral on the social media showing how the headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School was humiliated and forced to squat holding his ears in the presence of local Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Salim Osman.

The police report quotes Shyamal as saying that both he and the MP were victims of a situation caused by a rumour.

On May 29, the education ministry submitted a probe report to the HC through the AG office, saying the Piyar Sattar Latif High School committee forced Shyamal to resign based on an unproven allegation that he had hurt religious sentiment of the Muslims.

The allegation brought against Shyamal was not true, the probe body said, adding that relevant rules were not followed in suspending him. It also recommended that he should be reinstated.

Later, Shyamal was reinstated as headmaster of the school.
