N’ganj cop among 2 killed in anti-drug drive

Two persons including a police constable were killed when law enforcers busted a drug cartel in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj this afternoon.

Shah Md Manzur Quader, officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station, confirmed it to The Daily Star.

The deceased are identified as Ariful Rahman, 48, a constable of Sonargaon Police Station, and Matin, an alleged drug peddler, the OC said.

Locals said a team of plainclothes police conducted a drive against a drug cartel in Raisdia area around 4:30pm.

As they tried to arrest Matin, son of Mosleh Uddin, he jumped into a nearby pond to evade arrest. Constable Arif also jumped into the pond to nab him but Matin drowned there, reports a Narayanganj correspondent quoting the locals.

Later, the associates of Matin hurled brickbats at Arif when the policeman tired to swim ashore, leaving him critically injured. At one stage he also drowned in the pond.

Police recovered the bodies, the OC further said.
