Newly elected UP chairman, 2 members sent to jail

The newly elected chairman and two members of Dhalarchar Union Parishad under Bera upazila of the district were yesterday sent to jail on a murder charge. 

Chairman Korban Ali and members Balat Hossain and Amin Uddin, appeared before a Pabna court at noon, seeking bail in Goher Mondol murder case. Md Rashed Hossain, judicial magistrate of Pabna Cognizance Court-3, rejected their bail prayers and sent them to jail, said a court source.

"Korban and two others were given four weeks anticipatory bail by the High Court. As the time limit of the anticipatory bail expired, the court rejected their bail prayers and sent them to jail," he added.

Md Goher Mondol, 30, son of Pashan Mondol of Khoyerbagan village under the upazila, was a supporter of Awami League's (AL) rebel chairman aspirant Md Nasir Uddin. Korban's men killed him in a pre-poll clash in Khoyerbagan area on March 19.

Family filed a murder case with Bera Police Station on the day, accusing Korban and 47 others.

Korban contested the election, taking anticipatory bail from the High Court.

As the party nominated Korban, rival party men opposed him. The supporters rebel candidate Nasir Uddin clashed with Korban's men, leaving one dead and many injured.

Away in Thakurgaon, a court here yesterday sent defeated AL rebel chairman candidate for Ruhea Union Parishad in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila to jail in a case for vandalising a polling centre during May 7 election.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Shukanta Saha passed the order when defeated chairman candidate Abu Sayeed Babu surrendered before the court yesterday.   

According to the case statement, several hundred supporters of Babu encircled Modhupur Government Primary School centre and Ruhea Technical and Business Management College centre, demanding declaration of the results of the two centres.  

Fearing that the result of the chairman election would be changed, the people attacked Modhupur Government Primary School centre and vandalised doors, windows and furniture.

The agitated people threw brick chips at the law enforcers when Executive Magistrate Nazmul Hamid Reza, accompanied by Rapid Action Batallion (Rab) and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) men, went to the centre to rescue the election officials.

The law-enforcers fired 22 rounds of bullets and four teargas canisters to disperse the agitated people. 

The presiding officer of the polling centre, a lecturer of Abdur Rashid Degree College, filed a case on May 9, accusing seven people, including Abu Sayeed Babu, of vandalism the centre and obstructing the election officials from performing their duty.
