Police rescue kidnapped newborn sold in Noakhali
Police today rescued a newborn -- abducted and sold a day after birth -- from Chatkhil upazila of Noakhali and arrested three people in this connection.
After six hours of hectic efforts, police rescued the four-day-old baby girl from Noakhala village under the upazila and handed her over to the parents this morning, Md Anwarul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chatkhil Police Station, told reporters at his office.
Police also arrested Marjahan Begum (30), her sister Lovely Begum (32), and Mosharraf Hossain Gazi (42) -- from Noakhla village -- for their alleged involvement in the abduction, the OC said.
Belal Hossain, father of the baby, lodged a complaint with the police station saying that his wife Rina Begum (23) gave birth to the baby girl at Chatkhil Upazila Health Complex on July 23.
Marjahan and Lovely, who are related to Belal, were taking care of the baby while they were all leaving the hospital after getting released on July 24.
On their way out, the duo abducted the baby and took her to Sonaimuri area and then sold her to one Mosharraf Hossain Gazi, a resident of the same upazila, in exchange of Tk 60,000, the OC said citing the complaint.
Based on the complaint, police carried out a raid at Mosharraf's home early today and rescued the baby from his possession, the OC said.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees confessed to the crime, the OC said, adding that they were produced before a Noakhali court today and the court sent them to jail in this connection.
After getting back their baby, Belal and Rina were emotional and expressed gratitude to the police. They also thanked the police for rescuing the baby within a short time.
