Murder of 3 girls in Cox's Bazar: Killer father arrested

Police yesterday arrested the man, who allegedly killed his three minor daughters at Chowdhurypara village of Badarkhali in Cox's Bazar on Friday.

Provash Chandra Dhar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chakaria Police Station, said law enforcers, acting on secret information, arrested Abdul Gani from the main road in Bayazid Bostami area in Chittagong city at around 7:00am.

He was later produced in a court that sent him to jail.

On Friday, Abdul Gani slit the throats of his three daughters -- Ayesha Siddiqua Champa, 11, Shiru Jannat Sheuli, 9, and one-and-a-half-year-old Sharaban Tahura Baily -- while they were sleeping around 2:30am, according to police and relatives.

Gani, a rickshaw-puller by profession, fled home after committing the homicides, said the victims' mother Fatema Begum.

Fatema's elder brother, Asgar Ali, said Gani had phoned him around 3:00am asking him to inquire about his sister and nieces. Asgar immediately rushed to Gani's house and found the bodies of his nieces.

Fatema, married to Gani for 16 years, claimed to police that her husband has been involved in an extramarital relationship, an issue that often caused fights.

Locals held arbitration several times, but Gani never complied with the verdict of arbitration, said local Union Parishad member Khairul Bashar.
