Municipality polls: AL-mayoral candidates win in Barguna, Pirojpur, Natore and Cumilla

Awami League candidates won in the elections of five municipalities today as vote counting began in the third phase election to 62 municipalities across the country.

AL-candidates in five municipalities -- Patharghata of Barguna, Barguna Sadar, Swarupkathi of Pirojpur, Singra of Natore and Barura of Cumilla -- were unofficially declared winners.

AL-candidate Anwar Hossain Akon got 6,067 votes while his nears rival candidate Mahabubur Rahman begged 2232 votes in Patharghata municipality polls, said Barguna district election officer Dilip Kumar Hawlader.

AL-mayoral candidate advocate Kamrul Ahsan Moharaz achieved success with 9,297 votes while his nearest candidate got 6,903 votes in Barguna Sadar municipality elections, Dilip said.   

Meanwhile, AL-candidate Golam Kabir got 3,952 votes while his nearest rival and AL-rebel candidate Mahmudur Rahman Khan bagged 3,144 votes in the Swarupkathi municipality elections in Pirojpur, said returning officer Khan Abi Shahanur Khan.

Bedsides, AL-candidate Jannatul Ferdous won Natore's Singra municipality elections, while AL-candidate Md Bakter Hossain defeated BNP candidate Md Jasim Uddin Patwari in Cumilla's Barura elections, report our correspondents.

The third phase election to 62 municipalities ended across the country today amid reports of violence and election boycott by BNP candidates.
