Militants trying to destabilise country, says Rab DG

Bangladesh is a country of peace, but a small number of people in the name of religion are trying to destabilise the country by attacking temples, mosques and foreigners in Bangladesh, said Benazir Ahmed, Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).

"We saw the activities of that group in the country 10 years ago, and they have returned again," the Rab DG said during his visit to Kantanagar village in Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur district yesterday to attend a rally organised by the Dinajpur deputy commissioner's office.

Mir Khairul Alam, deputy commissioner (DC) of Dinajpur, chaired the meeting titled 'Preventing crimes.' Monoranjanshil Gopal, lawmaker of Dinajpur-1 constituency, Humayun Kabir, deputy inspector general (DIG) of Rangpur Range police, senior Rab officials in Dinajpur and Rangpur, and Ruhul Amin, superintendent of police (SP) of Dinajpur, were also present at the rally.

He sought cooperation from all quarters to fight against the militants.

The DG thanked the people of Kaharol for catching two people involved in the attack on Iskcon temple in the upazila on December 10.

"I am here to convey my gratitude to you people because you proved you are valiant," said the DG. He also urged the people to be aware of what their children are doing as the militant gang is trying to recruit young people in their organisation.

He urged the militants to surrender before the law enforcement agencies. Otherwise, they would find them out and put them on trial.
