Mayor-elect lands in jail in C'nawabganj
Tarique Ahmed, the newly elected mayor of Rohanpur Municipality in Gomostapur upazila of the district, was sent to jail yesterday.
He is general secretary of Rohanpur municipality unit of BNP, and accused in the case for hurling petrol bomb at a truck.
Tarique surrendered to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court yesterday, seeking bail. Judicial Magistrate Shahidul Islam rejected his bail prayer and sent him to jail, said Mahbubul Islam, court inspector of Chapainawabganj.
Police said a gang of 10 to 12 criminals intercepted a Shibganj bound potato-laden truck near Nimtala-Kanthal area of Gomostapur upazila at around 11:10 pm on March 4, 2015, and hurled a petrol bomb at it, leaving its driver Firoj Hossain, 35, helper Mohammad Selim Ali, 27, and potato trader Saheb Ali, 36, injured. The truck was coming from Dhamurhat upazila in Naogaon.
Police with the help of locals rushed the injured people to Gomostapur Upazila Health Complex. They were referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital the same night as their condition deteriorated.
Truck helper Selim died at RMCH on March 5 at around 6:00pm.
Police filed a case against Tarique Ahmed and others with Gomostapur Police Station the same day.
