Man killed during arbitration over disputed pond
A man was killed and nine others were injured by their rivals during an arbitration allegedly over a disputed pond in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj district on Wednesday.
The deceased, Akkas Ali, 50, son of Belayet Hossain, was a resident of Langalmora village in the upazila.
Police said Akkas had a longstanding feud with one Hares Ali of Pauta village in the upazila, over the ownership of a pond.
A few days ago, an altercation took place when Hares's men went to the disputed pond at Langalmora village and started catching fish there.
To settle the matter, Mohammad Moinul Islam, president of Baruhash union unit of Awami League, asked both the feuding groups to attend an arbitration at his residence at Pauta village on Tuesday noon.
At one stage of the arbitration, Hares's men suddenly attacked Akkas and his supporters with wooden sticks and bamboos, leaving 10 people, including Akkas seriously injured.
Critically injured Akkas was rushed to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the same evening, Officer-in-Charge ATM Aminul Islam of Tarash Police Station said.
Of the injured, Mamun, 25, Shakil, 15, Sayem, 35, Sentu, 20, Amzad, 50, Abbas Ali, 35, and Shipon were admitted to Tarash Upazila Health Complex.
