Man jailed for throwing acid on teenage girl

A man was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for throwing acid on a teenage girl in Fenchuganj upazila of Sylhet district in 2000.

The convict is Ayez Ali, 35, son of late Mofiz Ali of Mollikpur village in the upazila.

Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, Sylhet, also fined him Tk 40,000. In default, he is to suffer one year more in jail.

According to the prosecution, Ayez Ali wanted to have sexual relationship with the victim. As she refused, Ayez Ali threw acid on her on December 8, 2000, leaving her critically injured.

Later, the victim filed a case, accusing Ayez Ali.

After examining the records and witnesses, Judge Bimal Chandra Sikdar handed down the verdict, said Abdul Malek, public prosecutor of the tribunal.
