Locals form human chain demanding capital punishment of an alleged rapist in Panchagarh
Protesting the rape of a tenth-grader student allegedly by an advocate, locals in Panchagarh formed a human chain demanding punishment of the accused lawyer this afternoon.
Under the banner of "Residents of Atwary", the human chain was formed in front of Atwary upazila parishad, where the speakers demanded to ensure capital punishment to the culprit so that none can dare to commit such crime.
Over a hundred people took part in the human chain.
Among others, Manaj Roy Hiru, upazila unit president of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, its General Secretary Ganesh Chandra Ghosh Vanu, Tariqul Islam, headmaster of Barashinga High School, also addressed the programme.
According to the case statement, H M Habibur Rahman Habib, a lawyer of Panchagarh Lawyers Association and son of late Abdul Khalek of Baragaon village under Dhamor union of Atwary upazila of the district, took the girl on a motor-bike to his client's house at Kallikapur village near Mirza Golam Hafiz College, where he forcibly raped her.
Meanwhile, a Panchagarh court sent the lawyer to jail, rejecting his bail petition following the accused lawyer being produced before a court this afternoon in connection with the case.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Minhajur Rahman passed the order.
Following the rape incident, the victim's father filed a case with Atwary Police Station, accusing three persons including Habibur Rahman, his client Shushil and the client's wife Shukani in this connection.
