Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam has called upon the Lebanon government to recruit more Bangladeshi workers.

He placed the appeal during a courtesy call with Lebanese Interior and Municipalities Minister Nouhad Machnouk in the Middle Eastern country today, said a ministry press release.

The two ministers have agreed to ensure safe migration so that the workers do not become victims of exploitation by the brokers.

Earlier, Nurul Islam held a bilateral meeting with the Lebanese Labour Minister Sejaan Azzi and requested him to hire workers from Bangladesh for construction and service sectors. He also urged the Lebanese minister to increase the salaries of the Bangladeshi workers.

Lebanese Minister Sejaan Azzi assured Nurul Islam of hiring more male workers with the female domestic from Bangladesh. The two ministers emphasised on reducing migration costs, speed up the recruitment procedure, and remove involvement of middlemen.

Around 1.5 lakh Bangladeshis are now working in Lebanon. Mostly are female workers. Nurul Islam is now visiting Lebanon where he has reached August 10.
