Land dispute leaves 30 injured in Sunamganj

At least 30 people were injured, 12 by bullets, during a clash between two groups of villagers over a land dispute at Khasila village in Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj district on Tuesday.

Of the bullet-hit people, five were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the rest are undergoing treatment at Sunamganj Sadar Hospital.

Police quoted villagers as saying there had been a longstanding dispute between Dudu Mia and Shipon Mia of the village over the ownership of a piece of land.

After iftar on Tuesday, an altercation took place between the two over the issue, Sub-inspector Anwar Hossain of Jagannathpur Police Station said.

At one stage, the supporters of the two, equipped with sharp weapons attacked each other. They also traded gunshots during the clash that left 30 people from both sides injured.

On information, police went to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control.

Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert any further untoward incident, the SI said.
