Kushtia Jubo League leader held with revolver
Detectives arrested a Jubo League leader along with a revolver and six bullets from the party office in Kushtia last night.
Arrestee AZM Samrat is the joint convener of Jubo League Kushtia town unit, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
A team of plain-clothes police picked up Samrat from the Jubo League office at Aga Yusuf Market in Majampur area around 8.30pm, Sabbirul Alam, in-charge of Kushtia Detective Branch of police, told The Daily Star.
Samrat will be produced before the court in connection with three extortion cases filed against him, the DB official said.
AZM Samrat is known as an all party leader as he has become the joint convener of Jubo League, the youth front of the ruling Awami League, even though he held a post in Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Party sources said.
He was president of pro-BNP student body JCD Kamalapur ward since 2006 till the abolition of the committee in January 2016 but he became a joint convener of Kushtia town Jubo League in 2014, said Abdur Razzak Bachchu, office and publicity secretary of Kushtia district BNP.
Using these identities, he used to commit many crimes including extortion, said locals and a police official, wishing not to be named.
On August 20, police recovered three magazines and a bullet during a raid at Samrat's office in Thanapara area in the town but police could not arrest him as he was not present there.
The raid was carried out following his alleged involvement in a clash between Swechchhasebak League and Jubo League activists in Kushtia on August 15 that left one Jubo League man dead.
After the raid, he suffered a suspension of three days from Jubo League, reports our correspondent.
