Jubo league leader escapes from police custody in Barguna

3 policemen withdrawn for negligence of duty

A local Jubo League leader escaped from police custody in Sadar upazila of Barguna last night hours after police had arrested him with 10 grammes of cannabis.

The accused, Miraj Gazi Prince (30), is president of Naltona union's ward-5 unit of Jubo League, said Naltona Union Awami League General Secretary Shah Alam.

Miraj managed to flee from Babuganj Police outpost in Noltana hours after being arrested, said Mofizul Islam, additional superintendent of Barguna Police.

A police team arrested Miraj and his accomplice Kashem (26) in possession of the drugs and took them to the Babuganj police outpost around 11:00pm yesterday, the police official said. 

Miraj escaped from the police outpost around 12:00am, said Mofizul Islam.

However, Kashem was sent to jail by a court today, our Patuakhali correspondent reports quoting the police official.

Meanwhile, three policemen of the outpost were withdrawn for negligence of duty, said Adl SP Mofizul.

The three withdrawn policemen are Ranjit Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of the police outpost, Sub-Inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam and constable Touhid.

Later, Inspector Sanjay Kumar Majumder was given the charge of Babuganj Police outpost.

AL leader Shah Alam further said Miraj was arrested twice before by police due to drug related reasons.
