Jamuna continues to swell worsening flood in Tangail

Star Online Report

Flooding worsened in Tangail after the Jamuna river increased 11cm in the last 24 hours, flowing 99cm above the danger level, sources at the Water Development Board (WDB) said.

The water levels in other rivers, including Dhaleswari and Jhenai, have also increased, inundating previously undisturbed areas, especially the chars, our local correspondent reports.

Sirajul Islam, executive engineer of WDB, said the water may decrease in the next couple of days.

However, fresh floods are expected from July 21 and it may see a peak on July 25 and July 26, he said citing the forecast.

There have been leakages found on Bhuapur-Tarakandi flood control embankment-cum-road due to the huge pressure of the flood water, Sirajul said, adding if this embankment collapsed, many areas in the four upazilas would be flooded.

About 1.3 lakh people in 151 villages of the district have been affected by the flood. Hundreds of houses have been washed away, while several roads and embankments collapsed and crops were damaged in the affected areas.
