Housewife killed for dowry

A housewife was beaten to death by her husband allegedly for dowry in Chorghoshpur area of Pabna Sadar upazila early yesterday, said Abdul Malek, sub-inspector (SI) of Pabna Sadar Police Station.

The victim, Joly Khatun, 22, was wife of Shimul Mondol of the village.

Shimul Mondol and his family members had gone into hiding soon after the incident, the SI said, adding that police recovered the body and sent it to Pabna Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy in the afternoon.

Joly's uncle Md Abdul Latif said she was often tortured by her husband for dowry.

"Her husband used to torture my niece and also forced her to bring money from her father's house. We gave him Tk 5,000 to Tk 10,000 at several times, but he forced her to bring more money. Recently, Joly could not meet Shimul's demand for Tk 10,000, and was killed because of that," Latif said.

Shimul Mondol and his family members beat Joly dead in front of her five-year-old daughter and later hung the body from the ceiling of their house, Latif said, quoting the daughter of the victim.

Md Abdulla Al Hasan, officer-in-charge of Pabna Sadar Police Station, said a case was filed with Pabna Police Station, accusing Shimul and four of his family members.
