HC upholds Rashedul Chisty’s bail in corruption case
The High Court today upheld a lower court order that granted bail to Rashedul Haque Chisty in a corruption case involving Tk 9.28 crore.
On June 14, a special judge court of Tangail had granted bail to Rashedul Haque Chishty, son of Mahbubul Haque Chisty, the former chairman of Farmers Bank's audit committee.
On June 15, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a petition with the High Court to cancel the Tangail court order.
The ACC had filed the case with Tangail Model Police Station on September 16, 2018 against Rashedul and three others on charge of misappropriating and laundering Tk 9.28 crore from the bank.
Yesterday, the High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder upheld the order of Rashedul's bail on four conditions.
The bench said in the order that he must submit his passport to the trial court and cannot leave the country without permission from the court concerned.
Rashedul also cannot involve himself with the activities of Farmers Bank and cannot interfere in the investigations against him, the High Court said in the order.
Rashedul, however, cannot get released from jail following today's HC order as the court on May 20 stayed another lower court order that had granted bail to him in a separate corruption case filed against him on charge of laundering Tk 159 crore, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alarm Khan told The Daily Star.
The ACC will move an appeal before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging today's HC order.
Advocate Khurshid Alarm Khan argued for the ACC and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Manik represented the state while Advocate Shahariar Kabir Biplab appeared for Rashedul during the virtual hearing.
