Gun attack on Bagerhat UP chairman, 3 arrested

Police yesterday arrested three people from Bagerhat town for their alleged involvement in Tuesday's gun attack on Chingrikhali Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Talukdar Ali Akkas Bulu in Morelganj upazila.

The arrestees are Kalam Khan, 42, son of Wazed Khan of Depuarpar village in Morelganj upazila and president of Chingrikhali union unit of Swechchhasebak League, Khabir Khan, 36, son of Nurul Islam Khan of the village, and Rubel Sheikh, 24, son of Hemayet Sheikh of Borojamua village.

On Tuesday morning, criminals beat and fired gunshot at Talukdar Ali Akkas, 52, in front of the union land office in the upazila.

Locals and witnesses said a gang beat up Ali Akkas, also the general secretary of the upazila unit of Awami League, around 200 yards away from his residence. They later shot Akkas in his leg and fled the scene.

Seriously injured Akkas was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital. He was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Officer-in-Charge Rashedul Alam of Morelganj Police Station said victim's elder brother Talukdar Alamgir Hossain filed a case, accusing Khabir Khan and ten others yesterday.
