Gaibandha Santals sue AL MP, UNO

Gaibandha Santals today filed a case against 33 including the local Awami League lawmaker and UNO in connection with the killing, looting, arson and illegal eviction of the indigenous community people on November 6.

In the case filed with Gobindaganj Police Station on behalf of the indigenous community, Thomas Hembrom, hailing from Harinabari, also sued 600 anonymous persons, our Gaibandha correspondent reports quoting police.

On November 6, a tripartite clash broke out between the Santals, staff of Rangpur Sugar Mills and police over the eviction of the indigenous people from the disputed land. The clash left three Santal men dead and 20 others, including nine policemen, injured.

AL lawmaker from Gainbandha-4 Principal Abul Kalam Azad, Gobindaganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Hannan, Chairmen of Shatmara and Katabari unions Shathil Akond Bulu and Rezaul Karim Rafique, Managing Director of Rangpur Sugar Mills Abdul Awal, are among the 33 people named in the case around 2:30pm.

Rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra and Amrao Pari are providing legal support to the Santals, the OC said.

On November 17, a case was filed against 500 unidentified people for attacking Santal families, looting and torching their houses and murdering two Santal men at Sahebganj farm.
