Flood engulfs 67 more villages in Gaibandha

The situation in Bogra, Jamalpur, Sirajganj remains static; several lakh people marooned

With inundation of 67 more villages in four upazilas of Gaibandha, the flood situation in the district worsened further yesterday.

The situation in Bogra, Jamalpur and Sirajganj districts remained unchanged as the river Jamuna was flowing above the danger mark on the day.

Our Gaibnadha correspondent reported that 67 more villages in Sadar, Sundarganj, Phulchhari and Saghata upazilas have been flooded, marooning over 80 thousand people.

The Brahmaputra and the Karotoa were flowing 26 and five centimetres above the danger mark yesterday, said sourecs at local Water Development Board (WDB).

The district administration shut 55 government primary schools in the upazilas as the institutions have gone under floodwater.

The administration has so far allocated 52 tonnes of rice and Tk 50 thousand as relief for the flood-hit areas.

According to our Bogra correspondent, at least 50 thousand people in Sonatola, Sariakandi and Dhunat upazilas of the district remained marooned for the third day yesterday.

Sources in the Water Development Board said the flood situation in the district remained static as the Jamuna River was flowing above the danger mark.

The district administration has already distributed 60 tonnes of rice and dry food among the 1000 flood victims in the upazilas, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Khorshed Alam.

According to our Jamalpur correspondent, the flood situation in the district showed no sign of improvement yesterday.

The Jamuna was flowing 44 cm above danger level at Bahadurabad ghat point as of filing of this report at 6:00pm yesterday, reports our correspondent.

Over 27 thousand people of 102 villages in four upazilas have been affected by the flood, said sources at the District Relief and Rehabilitation Office.

About 6346 hectares of croplands in Islampur, Dewanganj, Sarishabari and Madarganj upazilas have been damaged, said Dr Rafiqul Islam, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in the district. 

Away in Sirajganj, over one lakh people in five upazilas of the district are still marooned, reports our Pabna correspondent.

The flood-hit people have already taken shelter on the flood protection embankment, said locals.

The Jamuna was flowing 61 cm above the danger mark yesterday, said local WDB sources.

Sirajganj WDB Executive Engineer Md Hasan Imam said the water level in the river may rise further.

 The district administration has already allocated 100 tonnes of rice as relief for the marooned people, said sources.
