Five to walk gallows for murder in Sunamganj
A Sunamganj court yesterday sentenced five people to death for killing a labourer in Tahirpur upazila of the district in 2006.
The death penalty awardees are Abdur Rahim, 43, son of Md Kanchna Miah,
Ershad Ali, 46, Julhas Miah, 55, and Emran Miah, 35, sons of
Azim Uddin, and Moharam Ali, 36, son Montaj Miah. They all hail from Kalikapur village in the upazila.
Of them, Ershad Ali, Julhas Miah, and Emran Miah were tried in absentia.
The court also acquitted six others as murder charges brought against them could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, the five stabbed labourer Arju Miah, a resident of the same village, to death near Jadukata River on November 15, 2006 as a sequel to a previous enmity.
Arju's brother Nazrul Islam filed a murder case with Tahirpur Police Station the same day, accusing11 people.
After investigation, police pressed charges against the accused. Additional District and Sessions judge Pronoy Kumar Das, after examining the case record and witnesses, handed down the verdict.
