Five get life in Narsingdi gang-rape case
A court here yesterday sentenced five youths to life imprisonment for raping a teenage girl in Sadar upazila last year.
The lifers are Shah Alam, 18, son of Abdur Razzak, Sabuj, 18, son of Alam, Ramzan, 18, son of Rafique, and Makaram alias Mobarak, 18, son of Mohiuddin of Daspara village under Sadar upazila; and Swapon, 18, son of Afaj Uddin of Hatubhanga village in Raipura upazila.
The court also fined the convict Tk one lakh each. In default, they are to suffer one year more in jail.
According to the prosecution, the 14-year-old girl was gang-raped by the convicts when she went to neighbour Shah Alam's house at his request for cooking food for him on January 19.
Victim's father filed a case against the five people with Sadar Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act the following day.
Police later arrested the youths who made confessional statements before the court. Sub-inspector Mahabub of Sadar Police Station submitted a charge sheet against them on June 26, 2014.
After examining the records and witnesses, Judge Shamim Ahmed of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict.
