Extortionists swoop on cops, one injured

A police officer was injured in an attack by a gang of extortionists on Rangpur-Jaldhaka road in Jaldhaka upazila of the district yesterday.

Police and locals said a gang of youths of Binnakuri village of the upazila started collecting money in the name of Eid reunion. They stopped vehicles plying the Rangpur-Jaldhaka road and forcibly took money from passengers and drivers.

The extortionists harassed those who refused to meet their demand and delayed their journeys.

Some affected bus drivers informed Jaldhaka Police Station, asking the police to take steps to stop the extortion and harassment.

Officer-in-charge of Jaldhaka Police Station, Hasan Imam Enam, said a police team led by ASI Mahbubul Huq reached the spot and tried to disperse the youths.

At this, the youths became furious and attacked the law enforcers, seriously injuring the ASI.

Other members of the police team chased the youths and arrested one of them.
