EC filing case against Dr Sabrina for possessing dual NIDs

The Election Commission (EC) is going to file a case against JKG Healthcare Chairman Dr Sabrina Arif Chowdhury for having acquired dual National Identity Cards (NIDs) with fake information.

Confirming the matter to journalists, EC Secretary Md Alamgir said he has given directives to the Director General of its NID wing.

The EC has already blocked one NID issued under Sabrina's name.

"We're already investigating who helped Sabrina in getting the second NID," he said.

According to Voter Talika Ain 2009, acquiring dual NID is a punishable offence, the minimum punishment being two years imprisonment or fine or both.

According to EC's NID division, Sabrina become a voter for the first time in 2009, when she used her current and permanent address in Mohammadpur. She mentioned her date of birth as being December 2, 1978.

She mentioned her husband's name to be H Haque and educational qualification as being post-graduation.

But in her second NID issued in 2016, she mentioned her permanent and current address in Badda and her husband's name as Ariful Chowdhury. In that ID, she used December 2, 1983 as her date of birth.

She also changed her mother's name, as well as educational qualifications, declaring herself a graduate.

EC's NID Wing DG Brigadier General Mohammad Sidul Islam said they did not spare anyone in the past for acquiring dual NIDs. "We won't spare anyone in this case as well," he said.

Sabrina and her husband Ariful Haque Chowdhuy is accused in a case filed over issuing fake COVID-19 certificates.

Recently, the ACC has begun enquiry against their wealth. During the enquiry, ACC Deputy Director Selina Akhter Moni found Sabrina to have dual NIDs in her possession.

On August 18, she wrote a letter to the EC asking whether a person can possess dual NIDs.
