Downpour, upstream water worsen floods in N dists

Tens of thousands of people marooned; face food, water crisis

Overall flood situation in the northern districts see sudden deterioration as all the rivers including Brahmaputra, Dudhkumar, Dharla and Teesta have swollen due to heavy downpour for the last couple of days and onrush of water from the upstream across the border.

Around one lakh people of 95 villages in 16 unions of five upazilas under Lalmonirhat district have been marooned by the floodwater, reports our correspondent.

The water of the Dharla was flowing 28 centimetres above the danger level at Noonkhawa Ghat point in Lalmonirhat while the Teesta was flowing only two centimetres below its danger level in Lalmonirhat yesterday noon, said Water Development Board (WDB) sources.

Aman paddy, vegetables and other crops on thousands of acres of land have gone under the flood water in the district.

"At least eight thousand people of 15 villages under this union have been marooned by the flood water as the Dharla River is flowing above the danger mark. Many roads and croplands have gone under water," said Habibur Rahman, chairman of Mogholhat union parishad in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila.

Rescue teams are helping affected people to shift to safer places, he said.

If the incessant rainfall continues for the next 48 hours, the district will face a serious flood situation, said Al-Mamun, sub-divisional engineer of WDB in Lalmonirhat.

Our Kurigram Correspondent reports: Water of the Dharla River was flowing 24 centimetres above the danger level at Dharla Bridge point of Kurigram Sadar upazila yesterday morning, local WDB sources said.

Rainfall was recorded 316 millimetre (mm) in Chilmari Ghat point, 267 mm in Kaunia Ghat point and 126 mm in Dharla Bridge point within 24 hours till 6:00am yesterday, WDB sources said.

Over one lakh people of about five hundred char (shoal) and lowland areas of 72 unions under nine upazila are suffering due to shortage of fuel, food, cattle feed and shelter, being marooned by the floodwater for last three days, according to chairmen sources. 

"Train service at Panchpir, Ulipur, Balabari and Ramna railway stations under the district was hampered as two trains did not run on Kurigram-Ramna route today [Saturday]. Water is flowing over one kilometre area of the railway lines in Ulipur bus terminal area of Ulipur upazila," said Nur Alam, Sub-Assistant Engineer (in Kurigram) of Lalmonirhat railway division.

Besides, earth adjoining the lines has been washed away at different places of Ulipur and Chilmari upazilas, he said.

A number of educational institutions declared holiday as water has entered class-rooms.

Our Bogra Correspondent reports: The onrush of the water from the upstream has inundated huge areas of Shariakandi upazila in the district, affecting around one lakh people.

In the last 24 hours, 68 cm of water had been increased and water of Jamuna has been flowing 13 cm (above 16.83 cm) above the danger mark at Shariakandi point, said Water Development Board and upazila administration sources.

Thousands of people in Noakhila, Ghugumari, Atbaria, Mondalpara, Shekpara, and Boirakandi villages under Chandanbaisha union, Rohodoho, Godakhali, and Eshamoti villages under Kamalpur union and several villages under Kutubpur union of the upazila are worst affected due to the sudden rise of water.

Our Gaibandha Correspondent adds: Erosion by the Jamuna has taken an alarming turn, rendering 35 families at Kalasona, Ratenpur and Uriya villages in Fulchhari upazila homeless within last 24 hours.

A dyke along the western bank of the Jamuna at Ratanpur is now threatened.

According to Gaibandha WDB, water level in the Jamuna increased by 74 centimetres within the last 24 hours and it is likely to cross the danger mark any time.

Overflowing Teesta flooded croplands and many dwelling houses in Belka, Kapasia, Chandipur, Haripur unions, said Abdul Hye Milton, upazila nirbahi officer of Sundarganj.

Flood situation in Dinajpur and Sherpur districts has worsened too.
