Star Online Report

Doctors in Jamalpur General Hospital and other upazila health complexes in the district have been observing work abstention for third consecutive day, paralysing the treatment facilities in the district.

Medical professionals also closed their private chambers in Mymensingh division protesting the attack on doctors following death of a patient at Jamalpur General Hospital, said Dr Md Mahfuzur Rahman Sohan, assistant director of the hospital.

The work abstention of the doctors put the medical service seekers in immense suffering, a correspondent from Jamalpur reports.

Meanwhile, locals and relatives of Karimon Begun, 65, who died allegedly because of negligence of the hospital authority demonstrated, blocking the road at Bakultola intersection in Jamalpur town.

At the rally, they demanded punishment of the doctors involved with the negligence, withdrawal of the case against the relatives and withdrawal of the work abstention by the doctors.

"We will go back to work as soon as our demands are met," said Dr Mahfuzur Rahman.

"We are observing the work abstention with four point demand including punishment of the responsible persons who injured and tortured doctors and withdrawal of the officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station", he added.

Following the death of the patient, relatives clashed with the doctors at Jamalpur General Hospital on Friday.

Police Charged batons to control the situation injuring Dr Lutfar Rahman, health and family planning officer of Sadar upazila, and some intern doctors.

The doctor and interns were also detained and later released by the police.

Dr Lutfar is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka, said Dr Mahfuzur.
