Transport workers this afternoon postponed their 24-hour strike across five districts of Chittagong following the assurance from police personnel to realise their demand.

The regional committee of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation decided to postpone its strike from 3:00pm today after top police officials of Chittagong Metropolitan Police and district police held talks with the transport leaders.

Among others, Chittagong Additional Commissioner (traffic) Masood Ul Hasan and Superintendent of Police (SP) Nure Alam Mina were present at the meeting, our local correspondent reports.

"They have assured us of addressing our problems and will hold a meeting with all the authorities concerned in this regard," Md Musa, president of the committee, told The Daily Star.

He said, "The police officials have also promised to take action against police personnel who would be found guilty of harassing transport workers."

Earlier, transport workers enforced a 24-hour strike across five districts of Chittagong from this morning that caused sufferings to the people.

The agitating transport workers announced the strike Saturday to press home their nine-point demand including construction of bus and truck terminals, parking spots for auto-rickshaws and three-wheelers.

Their other demands also included registrations for CNG-run auto-rickshaws and fixing daily deposits for CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers at Tk 600.
