‘Criminal’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with Satkhira cops
An alleged criminal was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira early today.
Deceased Oliullah Mollah, 36, of Kashimari village in the upazila, was accused in 13 cases filed over different charges including sabotage, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports quoting police.
Oliullah 's uncle Shahjahan Ali told the daily that Oliullah, who worked as a labourer in Dhaka, was picked up by police from Parulia area in Debhata upazila of the district when he was going to the capital last night.
However, Kamal Hossain, an information officer of Satkhira District Police, said a patrol team of Shyamnagar police signalled a speedy motorcycle to halt in Ganghati culvert area at Kashimari village around 3:00am.
But the motorcyclist speed up the motorbike denying the signal and also opened fire and hurled crude bombs targeting police, Hossain said.
In reply, the law enforcers also fired shots triggering a "gunfight" that left one wounded, he added.
The injured was taken to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex where he was declared dead, the official further said.
Later, he was identified as Oliullah, he added.
The official claimed that two police personnel were also injured during the gunfight and they received first aid.
Police seized the motorcycle, a shutter gun and splinters of crude bombs from the spot.
