Couple killed as truck hits auto-rickshaw in Netrakona

A man and his wife were killed after a battery-run auto-rickshaw they were in was hit by a truck on the Mymensingh-Durgapur road in Netrakona's Purbadhala upazila this afternoon.

The victims were identified as Abul Kalam (42) and his wife Ritu Akter (30) of Southkandi village in the same upazila, our Mymensingh correspondent reports quoting police.

Quoting locals, Md Tauhidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Purbadhala Police Station, said the speeding truck hit the Shyamganj-bound auto-rickshaw from the opposite direction around 5:00pm.

The auto-rickshaw fell into the roadside ditch after being hit by the truck, leaving Ritu dead on the spot and her husband Kalam and driver Noor Uddin (35) injured seriously, said the OC.

The injured were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Kalam dead, said the police official.

Police seized the truck but its driver fled, added the OC.
