Corruption with Tk 10 rice for poor

Corruption and irregularities in distribution of rice to the poor at Tk 10 per kg have been alleged in different areas of Sylhet division.

Acting on a tip-off, Ajmeriganj police raided a ghat at Ajmeriganj upazila of Habiganj on Sunday and seized 260 sacks containing 7,800 kg of the allocated rice from a boat.

Organising Secretary of Ajmeriganj upazila Awami League Mohammad Zaman and trader Nasir Mia, residents of Ajmeriganj Municipality area, claimed ownership of the sacks of rice.

They told police that they purchased the rice from rice trader Md Mahmud Hossain Mia, owner of an auto rice mill in Ashuganj bazar under Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj, OC Md Ahidur Rahman of Ajmeriganj Police Station said.

Zaman and Nasir were detained and later released.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Ajmeriganj Titon Khisa said he will take necessary action against those who are selling the allocated rice.
