Cops have no intention to realise fine: DMP chief
Police have no intention to realise fine if there is discipline on the roads, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said today.
“Traffic division realises Tk six to seven crore monthly for violating of traffic rules (in Dhaka). It is a minimal amount and the government has no need of such amount of money,” he said speaking at an inaugural session of the fortnightly traffic awareness programmes at Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka.
“After taking charge, I told the traffic officials not to set a [monthly] target of realising fine,” the city police chief said.
Highlighting the suffering of victims of road accidents, the commissioner said, “Can you imagine a man die on the road due to your or our fault and leave his minor kinds in the life of uncertainty? And there will be no breadwinner who can support the family.”
“People will no longer tolerate unfit drivers will ply unfit vehicles and make our children blood-stained one after another,” he said.
“If we fail to bring discipline, our children who sit in front of us will unitedly drive us out from the roads. You cannot go to the streets and we will not be able to discharge our duties” he said drawing attention of the transport leaders and workers.
The commissioner said, “You will not find a single-family who has not lost at least one of their relative in such accidents. How long we will tolerate the chaotic situation?”
“It is the last chance of bringing discipline on the roads,” he said urging all to follow the traffic rules.
About implementation of the new Roads and Transport Act 2018, the commissioner said even the continuous violators will be given warning once or twice and make them aware of the law. Then he will be fined for traffic rule violation.
The commissioner said only vehicles seized up on the streets, remained unattended by drivers for a long time and ply on the streets without documents would be dumped by wrecker.
He urged the drivers not to drop any passengers in the middle of the roads and make prone to accidents.
