Cop “shoots himself” at barracks in Sylhet

A police constable reportedly shot himself in the chest on the roof of the Bishwanath Police Station barracks in Sylhet on Monday evening.

Constable Topu Debnath, 20, son of Tomal Debnath of Kashinagar village of Juri upazila in Moulvibazar, was said to be in critical condition.

The incident took place around 7:30pm while he was preparing for night duty at the barracks, our Sylhet correspondent reported.

“As far as we came to know, it’s an attempted suicide. But the reason behind this is unknown. His condition is very critical,” said Md Farid Uddin, superintendent of Sylhet Police.

Dr Himangshu Lal Roy, deputy director of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said, “The police constable was brought here with a bullet wound in his left chest, which is critical. After providing primary treatment, we referred him to Dhaka for better treatment.”
