Cop held for 'torturing' wife for dowry

A policeman was arrested on Sunday night on charge of torturing his wife for dowry at Murasatha village under Jahalakathi Sadar upazila.

The arrestee is constable Faysal Sharif of Babuganj Police Station under Babuganj upazila of the district.

Quoting the victim, Shahe Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jhalakathi Police Station, said Nupur Begum, daughter of Abdul Latif of Churaypara under Banaripara upazila of Barisal district, was married to Faysal around two years ago.

After their marriage, Faysal often tortured Nupur, demanding Tk 5 lakh as dowry.

On June 8, Faysal beat up Nupur and locked her in a room of their house following an altercation over the issue.

Halim Khan, a neighbour of the victim, rushed to the spot and rescued Nupur with the help of locals. She was admitted to Banaripara Upazila Health Complex.

"Nupur was beaten by her husband for dowry," the OC said.

Victim's brother Sahin Khan filed a torture case, accusing Faysal, with Jhalakathi Police Station on Sunday.

Police arrested Faysal from  his house the same night.

Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of Babuganj Police Station, said Faysal had gone home without permission.
