Cop held for killing wife for dowry in Chuadanga
A woman was killed allegedly by her husband over dowry in Jhenidah bus stand area of Chuadanga district town early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Sima Khatun, 29, wife of Sumon of the area, and mother of two children.
Police detained the accused, Sumon Ali, a constable of Bagmari police camp in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia district
Victim's younger brother Jewel Rana said Sumon's family members informed that Sima had died of heart attack. Receiving the news, they rushed to the spot and found her body hanging from the ceiling of her room.
Injury marks were found in her throat, said Jewel.
After the incident, Sima's relatives encircled the house of Sumon and chanted slogans against him. On information, police went to the spot and detained Sumon from his maternal uncle's house in the same area.
Thandu Mondol, father of Sima, alleged that Sumon often tortured her daughter for dowry.
The body was sent to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Chuadanga Sadar Police Station.
