Compensate Gaibandha Santals: Citizens’ group

Citing the attacks on Gaibandha Santals as violation of human rights, a platform of concerned citizens today demanded compensation for the families of the dead and injured victims.  
The platform also urged the authorities to take responsibility of treatment of the injured Santals.

Under the banner of Shocheton Nagorik, the group of citizens also demanded withdrawal of a "false case" and removal of the staff of the local administration involved in the attack in Gobindaganj upazila of the district on November 6.

On that day, police reportedly opened fire and lobbed teargas shells during an eviction drive at Sahebganj sugarcane farm, leaving two Santals dead and several others injured.

In protest, the Santals fired arrows at police personnel and Rangpur Sugar Mills workers, who joined the eviction drive. At least 25 people, including nine policemen, were wounded.

The civil society platform demanded a judicial enquiry into the deaths of what it said three Santals -- Shaymol Himbrom, Mongol Mandri and Romesh Tudu – in the attack.
Sanjeeb Drong, general secretary of Bangladesh Adivasi Forum, read out a written statement during a press briefing held at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) in this regard.

After a visit of its team to spots of the attack at Gobindaganj on November 13, the platform organised today's press briefing to press home their findings and demands.
He also urged the government to ensure safety and security to the families of the victims and free movement of the Santals.
